Social Networking in the News: Canadian Privacy Commissioner, ACLU demand privacy options from Facebook

August 28, 2009 by Daniel James

Just today, CNN reported on a privacy awareness campaign by the Northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Their campaign currently focuses on the privacy implications of using third-party Facebook quiz applications, noting that the developers of the third-party applications have unbridled access to "a user's profile information, including religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, photos, events, notes, wall posts, and groups."

Facebook has come under some pressure lately for this wide-open access. Earlier this month, the Canwest News Service reported that the Canadian privacy commissioner has been putting the fire under Facebook to enhance their privacy policy and profile access controls, demanding that Facebook respond to an 11-part complaint filed against the social network.
