Social networking as it exists today poses mounting challenges in maintaining users privacy, but new privacy-minded social networks offer a solution.
LOS ANGELES, Calif., September 9, 2009 -- A new social networking site, WeOurFamily, is seeking to address the privacy issues with social networking. As recent news articles report, privacy concerns among social networkers are increasingly more prevalent. WeOurFamily delivers unrivaled privacy to users through its explicit content sharing model. This new social network was launched on June 9, 2009, and has released several new features only four months into its Beta period.
The privacy issues with social networking have made headlines in recent weeks. On August 3, the U.S. Marine Corp. issued an outright ban on the use of social networking on the Marine Corp. network, citing risks of "information exposure, user generated content and targeting by adversaries." August 16, it was reported that the Canadian privacy commissioner was demanding more stringent privacy options from Facebook, and later on August 28, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) started a campaign to raise awareness for privacy issues on Facebook.
"The underlying problem is that the majority of users are not aware of their presence online," said Daniel James, co-founder of WeOurFamily. "The information that a person intends for only their family or friends to receive is often made available to a much broader audience." He continued to note that users of advertiser-funded sites like Facebook and MySpace often unknowingly sacrifice content licensing rights which legally allow those sites to use their members' content for their own purposes.
Privacy-oriented social networks like the subscription-based WeOurFamily offer a solution to the privacy woes that seem to be plaguing other social networks. As WeOurFamily explains it, they "[alter] the paradigm of privacy from implicit sharing to explicit sharing," meaning that members of the service share their photos, blogs, and other content with only the people they specify. In the four months since WeOurFamily launched, the service has implemented several new features, including search, multi-file uploads, and enhanced content management. Also, during their Beta period, WeOurFamily is extending all annual subscriptions--at $21.99 per year--for an additional year after the Beta ends.
Current social networkers can now find WeOurFamily on Facebook and Twitter. For more information about WeOurFamily and to sign up, visit www.weourfamily.com
